Precipitation Hardening Steels

Precipitation Hardening steels can be aged at varying temperatures to achieve varying degrees of mechanical strengths. These steels display characteristics of both austenitic and martensitic steels. The choice of precipitation hardening steel and its ageing process, can be tailored to meet the specific requirements of an application, where a balance of high strength, corrosion resistance and toughness is needed.

Applications

Used in defence, aerospace equipment and missile components and as a commercial grade in oil and gas industries, specifically for valves and pumps.

Properties

  • High strength
  • Acceptable level of toughness
  • Moderate – good corrosion resistance (comparable to 304)
  • High fatigue resistance
  • Suitable for heat treatment to achieve high strength
