- High hardenability; machines best in the hardened & tempered conditions (‘R’ or ‘S’)
- Moderate corrosion resistance; similar to 410, better than 416, lower than 431
- Poor weldability
- Loss of ductility at sub-zero temperatures
- Loss of strength by over-tempering at elevated temperatures
- Magnetic
- Valves, pumps & shafts
- Cutlery, blades
- Surgical instruments (scalpels, razors, internal clamps)
- Moulds
